The 5 Days Golden Monkeys & Chimps Tours takes you through Rwanda’s storied primate and forest destinations. Day 1 begins with arrival at Kigali Airport and a drive north to the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes for an overnight stay near Ruhengeri. On Day 2 you track endangered Golden Monkeys in their bamboo habitat, spending much of the day observing these “little primates.” Day 3 moves you south to Nyungwe Forest, with stops at cultural sites, botanical gardens, and tea-covered hillsides. Day 4 is devoted to chimpanzee tracking and sightings of other forest primates. On Day 5 you return to Kigali for departure. The tour includes lodge accommodation, meals as specified, ground transport, park fees, and guiding.
Golden Monkey tracking in Virungas: spend a full day with small groups observing these rare primates in bamboo-rich forest habitat.
Chimpanzee trek in Nyungwe: guided forest walks yielding sightings of chimps plus colobus, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabeys.
Cultural and scenic stops: visit Rwanda’s tea hills, Nyanza palace, botanical gardens and markets en route to Nyungwe.
Comfortable lodgings and full board included; professional guiding, transport and park fees provided; return transfer to Kigali for onward flight.
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be met by our safari guide and transferred north on a scenic drive through Rwandan countryside to Ruhengeri township in the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes. Dinner and overnight at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge/ Le Bambou Lodge/Kinigi Guest House.
This morning after an early breakfast, drive to the park headquarters and take part in an adventure, tracking the “Little Primates” of the Virungas, the Golden Monkey (Cercopithecus Kandti), now listed as endangered because of their small numbers. You will be part of a select group of a maximum of 6 people, and the track will take most of the day. After the trek, return to Kigali and check in at Chez Lando Hotel/Kigali Serena Hotel/Mille Collines Hotel for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, proceed to Nyungwe Forest National Park. Along the way, make stops at places of interest including local markets, the traditional palace of Rwanda’s Former King in Nyanza. In Butare, visit the Botanical Gardens and a cultural museum. Drive past green fields of tea scattered across the hillsides. Dinner and overnight at Nyungwe Forest Lodge/Peace Guest House/Gisakura Guest House.
Early start tracking for the chimpanzees, this can take anything from a few hours to a full day depending on where the chimpanzees are. It should be mentioned that it is not guaranteed to see the chimps as they are unpredictable and can move long distances in one day. There are several other primates in Nyungwe such as the Rwenzori colobus, L’Hoest’s monkey, Silver monkey, Owl faced monkey and the Grey cheeked Mangabey. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation. Dinner and overnight at Nyungwe Forest Lodge/Peace Guest House/Gisakura Guest House.
Have breakfast at the lodge and later drive back to Kigali to be dropped off at your preferred hotel or Airport for your onward flight.
