DURATION: 3 DAYS/2 NIGHTS

LAKE ELEMENTAITA

Lake Elementaita offers a short holiday to the Great Rift Valley Lakes to enjoy the beautiful scenery, birds as well as wildlife.

Elementeita is a small soda lake, nestled in the eastern sweep of the Great Rift Valley. The Lake is surrounded by spectacular country side that played an important role in the early colonial history of Kenya.  This was the estate and stronghold of Lord Delamere, the builder of the Kenya colony. Today Elementaita is a peaceful and low-key place, lying in the shadow of an impressively peaked hill known locally known as the ‘Sleeping Maasai’.

Lake Elementaita attracts many visiting flamingo and the shores are grazed by zebra, gazelle, eland and families of warthog. At the southern end of the Lake lie the “Kekopey” hot springs, which the Tilapia grahams breed. The springs are very popular for bathing. The local Masai’s claim that it can cure many diseases. The reed beds nearby are fishing grounds for night herons and pelicans.

Nearby is the Kariandusi Museum, at an important prehistoric site where stone hand axes and cleavers were discovered in 1929 by Louis Leakey.
